Rusted through?
Sills, arches and floors. Where the rust has gone through the metal we cut it out and let in new steel rather than filling over it, then seal and paint.
- We go over the sill or arch with a screwdriver to find how far the rot really goes, because it is always further than the bubble in the paint.
- The rotten steel is cut out back to clean metal and a new section is welded in, shaped to the original line.
- Welds are ground flat, the seam is sealed, and the bare metal is coated so rust cannot start again from behind.
- Then it is painted to match and the underside is protected.
Filling over rust looks fine for a few months and then it comes back through. So we cut the rotten steel out back to clean metal and weld new in, which is more work and the only way it stays fixed.
- Two or three photos of the damage, taken in daylight if you can.
- The make, model and colour, or the paint code if you know it.
